Father Edward G. Zogby, S.J.

Father Edward G. Zogby, S.J., who served at Our Lady of the Rosary/Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Manhattan and was a campus minister at Fordham University, died June 16 at Murray-Weigel Hall, the Jesuit infirmary in the Bronx. He was 76.

He had assisted at Our Lady of the Rosary, where he celebrated weekday Masses, since 2001. He resided at the Jesuit residence on Thompson Street, and during that time he developed close ties to the Chinese community in lower Manhattan.

He was campus minister at Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus while residing at the Jesuit Community at East 83rd Street in Manhattan, 1980-1983. He continued in that position and was active in other ministries in New York City, 1983-2001, while residing at the West Side Jesuit Community.

From 1969 to 1980 he taught theology at Le Moyne College in Syracuse. For many years he presented the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola in parishes, retreat centers and schools.

Born in Utica, he entered the Jesuits in Poughkeepsie in 1955 and professed vows in 1957. He studied for the priesthood at Loyola Seminary in Shrub Oak, Weston College in Massachusetts and Woodstock College in Maryland, and earned a master’s degree in sacred theology. He was ordained in 1967.

He held a doctorate in religious studies from Syracuse University, specializing in the writings of C.S. Lewis.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated June 22 at St. Francis Xavier Church in Manhattan. Burial was at the Jesuit Cemetery in Auriesville.
