Father Edward Gallagher Jr., S.A., who served at Graymoor in Garrison for five years, died Jan. 19. He was 90.

Father Gallagher was vocations director and director of candidates at Graymoor, 1973-1978. He also served in Saranac Lake and Raybrook; Washington, D.C.; North Carolina; Virginia; and Ontario, Canada.

Born in Philadelphia, he entered the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in 1965, professed final vows in 1970 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1971.

He served in the U.S. Army Reserves, 1949-1955, before earning bachelor’s degrees in philosophy from St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia, and theology from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. He received certificates in mental health disciplines from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.; studies of alcohol and alcoholism from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J.; and vocational rehabilitation from the Institute for the Crippled and Disabled, Manhattan.

A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 28 in St. Anthony Chapel of St. Paul Friary at Graymoor. Burial was in the friars’ cemetery.
