Father Emmanuel Sullivan, S.A., a former director of the Graymoor Ecumenical Institute in Garrison, died Dec. 19 at his residence, Holy Name Friary in Ringwood, N.J. He was 90.

He served as director of the Graymoor Ecumenical Institute, 1983-1989. At St. Pius X Seminary at Graymoor, he served as a philosophy professor, 1964-1967, and taught philosophy, 1961.

He received the Franciscan Peacemaker Award in 2007 and served on the Community Ecumencial Committee, 2002-2007.

He also served in Saranac Lake, Massachusetts, Canada and England.

He retired from active ministry in 1999 and took up residence at St. Paul Friary at Graymoor.

Born in Malone, he entered the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in 1943 and made final vows in 1952. He was ordained in 1955.

He earned a doctorate and master’s in philosophy from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and a bachelor’s in philosophy and theology there.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 27 in the St. Paul Friary Chapel at Graymoor. Interment was in the friars’ cemetery.
