Father Garrett J. Fitzgerald, S.J.

Father Garrett J. Fitzgerald, S.J., who served for more than 20 years at Fordham University, died Aug. 17 at Murray-Weigel Hall, the Jesuit health care center in the Bronx. He was 87.

He was assistant academic dean of Fordham’s College of Business Administration, 1983-2005.

He also taught Latin, English and religion at Fordham Preparatory School, the Bronx, 1958-1965 and 1968-1972.

From 1973 to 1980 he was chaplain at the U.S. military missile test site on Kwajalein Island in the Marshall Islands.

He was parochial vicar at St. John the Baptist parish, Yonkers, 1982-1983.

Born in Manhattan, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1945 and professed final vows in 1962. He was ordained in 1955. He held a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a master’s in theology from Woodstock College.

He is survived by a sister, Dorothy Walsh.

A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 21 at Murray-Weigel Chapel, with burial at the Jesuit Cemetery in Auriesville.
