Father Gavin Reilly, O.F.M. Cap.

Father Gavin Reilly, O.F.M. Cap., who served at Our Lady of Sorrows parish in Manhattan for 20 years, died Dec. 19 at St. Clare Friary in Yonkers. He was 90.

Father Reilly served as pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows, 1987-1997, where he also was twice a parochial vicar, 1984-1987 and 1976-1981. He also was a senior friar there, 2013-2015, and at Blessed James Haddad Friary, also in Manhattan, 2007-2013.

He was a parochial vicar at St. John the Baptist parish, Manhattan, 1999-2003.

Father Reilly taught dogmatic theology and served as dean of students at Mary Immaculate Friary, Garrison, while also serving as chairman of the theology department at Ladycliff College, Highland Falls, 1958-1970.

He also served in Brooklyn, Connecticut and New Hampshire.

Born in Brooklyn, he entered the Capuchin Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Mary in 1946, professed his final vows in 1950 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1954.

He completed his theological studies at Capuchin Theological Seminary, Garrison, and later received his licentiate in sacred theology from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and his doctor of sacred theology from Gregorian University, Rome.

His sisters, Joan Reilly-O’Neill and Margaret Reilly-Doyle, survive him.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 22 at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers. Burial was at Province of St. Mary Cemetery, Yonkers.
