Father Gerard T. Pellegrino, S.D.B.

Father Gerard T. Pellegrino, S.D.B., who served several assignments in the archdiocese, most recently at the Marian Shrine in Stony Point, died Sept. 20 at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. He was 70. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 25 at the shrine. Assigned to the shrine in 2005, he assisted in various priestly ministries. He also was a guidance counselor at Salesian High School in New Rochelle, 1998-1999; parochial vicar and director of religious education at Corpus Christi parish in Port Chester, 1991-1993; and retreat director at Don Bosco Retreat House in Haverstraw, 1993-1995 and 1987-1989. He was treasurer at the Salesians' provincial house in New Rochelle, 1982-1983, and director of religious education at the former Salesian Junior Seminary in Goshen, 1981-1982. He also served in Alabama, California, Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Ohio. Born in Brooklyn, he entered the Salesians in Newton, N.J., in 1957 and professed perpetual vows in 1965. He served at first as a brother; after discerning a call to priesthood, he studied at the Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, and was ordained in 1974. He held a bachelor's degree in history and political science from Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, and a master's in spirituality from Creighton University. He is survived by a stepbrother, Thomas Maloney. Burial was in the Salesian Cemetery in Goshen.
