Father Herbert W. Rogers, S.J.

Father Herbert W. Rogers, S.J., who served at Fordham University for 35 years as a teacher and administrator, died March 3 at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center in the Bronx. He was 95 and had resided since 2005 at Murray-Weigel Hall, the Jesuit infirmary in the Bronx. He taught theology at Fordham, 1955-1978, and was coordinator of continuing education, 1978-1990. Previously, he taught philosophy at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, 1954-1955, and rhetoric at St. Peter's College, Jersey City, N.J., 1946-1954. Born in Greenwich Village, he was in the first group to enter the Jesuits at the newly opened novitiate in Wernersville, Pa., in 1930. He professed vows in 1932. He studied philosophy and theology at Woodstock College in Maryland and was ordained there in 1944. A Funeral Mass was celebrated March 7 in the chapel in Murray-Weigel Hall. Burial was in the Jesuit Cemetery at Auriesville.
