Father James Boyce, O. Carm., an internationally recognized scholar and accomplished pianist, died Feb. 21 at St. Vincent’s Hospital. He was 60.
A teacher and professor of music at Fordham University since 1998, he served until recently as chairman of Fordham’s Department of Art History and Music. He published many articles and books on Carmelite liturgy.
In 2009, he was named Eastern regional provincial of the Carmelite Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary, a post he had held previously.
Ordained in 1977, he served in parishes in New Jersey and became pastor in Cresskill in 1989.
Born in Campbellton, New Brunswick, he entered the Carmelites in 1973 and professed vows in 1976. He studied for the priesthood at Washington Theological Union.
He held a master’s degree in music from The Catholic University of America and a master’s and doctorate in musicology from New York University.
He is survived by his brother, Raymond, and his sister, Diane Forestell. A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 27 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Tenafly, N.J. Burial followed at Mount Carmel Cemetery there.
