Father James C. Kalchthaler, M.M., who served for almost 30 years in the Philippines and 15 years in Indonesia as a pastor, parochial vicar and chaplain, died June 24 at St. Teresa's Residence in Ossining. He was 81. Following his ordination for the Maryknoll Fathers in 1956, he was assigned to the Philippines, where he was pastor in Nabunturan, 1958-1962. He was chaplain at Davao penal colony on Mindanao, 1962-1964; pastor of a parish in Davao Oriental, 1964-1969; and pastor of Tagum Cathedral, 1969-1974. He also served in Indonesia as a pastor in Jakarta, 1979-1994. He returned to the Philippines to serve at a parish in Malangas, 1994-1996. He was a chaplain at Davao Doctors' Hospital until his retirement to Maryknoll in 2003. Born in Pittsburgh, he entered Maryknoll in 1947 and studied for the priesthood at Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining. He is survived by a sister, Marie Conway, and two brothers, Robert and Ralph. A Funeral Mass was offered June 28 at Maryknoll, with burial in Maryknoll Cemetery.
