Father John A. Jensen, M.M.

Father John A. Jensen, M.M., died on Nov. 20 in Santiago, Chile, where he had served as a Maryknoll missioner for the past 49 years. He was 89. In 1957, he received his first assignment to Chile. He served in parishes in Buzeta, Pemuco, Curepto and Quechereguas, and was chaplain at the agricultural school run by the Maryknoll Brothers in Quechereguas. From 1969 to 1983, he ran an audio-visual mobile unit that went from parish to parish presenting religious and cultural programs. From 1986 until his death, he did pastoral work at the Cathedral Parish of San Bernardo, Chile. Father Jensen, who was born in Buffalo, studied for the priesthood at Maryknoll Apostolic College in Clarks Summit, Pa., and Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining. He was ordained in 1944. He earned a doctorate in sacred theology from Gregorian University in Rome. He taught Scripture at Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining, 1947-1949, and then taught at Maryknoll Junior College in Lakewood, N.J. He is survived by his sisters, Marion Langenfeld and Elizabeth Eller. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 22 at San Bernardo Cathedral, followed by burial there. A Memorial Mass was offered Nov. 28 at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Chapel at the Maryknoll Society Center in Ossining.
