Father John C. Ganly, M.M.

Father John C. Ganly, M.M., who served as a missioner to Africa, died on Feb. 15 at St. Teresa's Residence in Ossining. He was 79. He was assigned to serve in Tanzania shortly after his ordination to the priesthood for Maryknoll in 1959. He first was assigned to missions in the Shinyanga Diocese. He became pastor of the Ilumya mission in 1965. In 1975, he returned to the United States to do mission education and promotion work in Philadelphia, where he developed the successful Young Sponsor Program for college students. From 1978 to 1984 he served at Maryknoll's new mission in Zambia. He then was director of Maryknoll's mission promotion houses in Cincinnati and Cleveland; South Orange, N.J.; and St. Louis. Born in St. Louis, he served in the U.S. Navy and then earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from St. Louis University. He studied at Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis before entering Maryknoll in 1956. He held a bachelor's degree in sacred theology from Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining. He is survived by a sister, Mary Louise Borzillo, and a brother, Neal. A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 20 in Queen of Apostles Chapel at Maryknoll Society Center in Ossining. Burial was in Maryknoll Cemetery.
