Father John J. McKenna

Father John J. McKenna, pastor emeritus of St. Joan of Arc parish in Sloatsburg, where he served for 18 years, died Sept. 21. He was 97.

Retired Auxiliary Bishop Gerald T. Walsh celebrated the Funeral Mass Sept. 25 in the chapel of the John Cardinal O’Connor Pavilion in the Bronx. Msgr. William V. Reynolds delivered the homily.

Father McKenna was pastor of St. Joan of Arc from 1979 until his retirement in 1997. He also served as parochial vicar on Staten Island at Our Lady Star of the Sea, 1971-1979 and St. Mary of the Assumption, 1955-1971; St. Margaret Mary, the Bronx, 1953-1955 and St. Joseph’s, Yonkers, 1947-1948. He taught at Cardinal Hayes High School, the Bronx, 1948-1953.

Born in Manhattan, he studied for the priesthood at Cathedral College and St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie. He was ordained in 1947.

He earned a master’s degree in education from Fordham University.

Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, Queens.
