Father Matthew T. Conlin, O.F.M.

Father Matthew T. Conlin, O.F.M., former president of Siena College in Loudonville, died April 24 at Holy Name Friary in Ringwood, N.J. He was 92.

He was president of Siena College from 1970 to 1976. He began teaching in Siena’s English department in 1945. Following doctoral studies at University College in Dublin and at Oxford University, he returned to Siena where he served as an English professor and department chairman, and dean and vice president for academic affairs.

He taught at the Catholic University of Puerto Rico, 1976-1979. He then co-founded Anthony Houses, five residences serving the needy in Jersey City, N.J.

He was vicar provincial of the Franciscans’ Holy Name Province, 1982-1987. He served at a parish in Rochelle Park, N.J., 1987-1990, while completing graduate studies in pastoral counseling at Iona College. He later was a pastor in Wilmington, Del., 1991-1996.

Born in Barker, he entered Holy Name Province in 1940 and made final vows in 1944. He was ordained in 1945.  

A Memorial Mass was offered April 27 at St. Mary of the Angels Chapel at Siena. He donated his body to New York Medical College in Valhalla.
