Father Peter Taran, S.A.

Father Peter Taran, S.A., who served for 12 years at the Christian Unity Center at Graymoor in Garrison, died June 30 at Cabrini of Westchester Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry. He was 85.

Father Taran was at the Christian Unity Center, 1986-1998. He was vicar general on the general council of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, 1981-1985, and cleric master at St. Pius X Seminary, Garrison, 1960-1961. He also served in Montour Falls, Washington, D.C., Massachusetts and England.

Born in the Bronx, he entered the Franciscan Friars of Atonement in 1950, professed final vows in 1957 and was ordained in 1960.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in theology from the St. John’s Atonement Seminary, Montour Falls, and a master’s in theology from Angelicum University, Rome.

A Funeral Mass was offered July 3 in the Our Lady of the Atonement Chapel, Graymoor. Burial was in the friars’ cemetery.
