Father Ramon C. Frias, O.F.M. Cap.

Father Ramon C. Frias, O.F.M. Cap., who served as a parochial vicar at St. John the Baptist parish in Manhattan for 11 years, died Aug. 30 in White Plains. He was 79.

Father Frias was at St. John the Baptist, 1997-2002 and 2008-2014. He also was a parochial vicar at Our Lady of Sorrows parish, lower Manhattan, 1991-1993.

He was guardian of St. Conrad Friary, White Plains, 2014-2018; chaplain of St. Mary’s children’s rehabilitation center, Ossining, 2004-2007; teacher at St. Agnes High School, Manhattan, 1995-1997; provincial vocation director, 1987-1990; Catholic chaplain at SUNY New Paltz, 1982-1987; and teacher at Sacred Heart High School, Yonkers, 1981-1982.

He also served in Brooklyn, Athol Springs and England.

Born in Brooklyn, he was ordained for the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1972. He entered the Capuchin Franciscans’ Province of St. Mary in 1980 and professed final vows in 1984.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from St. John’s University, a master in divinity from Our Lady of Angels Seminary, Albany; a master’s in psychiatric social work from Hunter College; and a master’s in Franciscan spirituality from St. Bonaventure University, Olean.

A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 5 at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Yonkers.
