Father Robert Bauer, S.D.B,

Father Robert Bauer, S.D.B, who taught in Rome for 25 years, died March 23 at United Hebrew Nursing Home in New Rochelle. He was 78.

Father Bauer was a professor of the Old Testament, Hebrew and Greek at Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome, 1976-2001. He taught at Salesian High School, New Rochelle, 1966-1967, and taught candidates for the Salesians of Don Bosco, 1964-1966.

He also served in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Florida and California.

The retired priest had resided since 2006 at the Salesian provincial house in New Rochelle.

Born in Chicago, he entered the Salesians of Don Bosco at the juniorate in Haverstraw and professed final vows in 1966. He was ordained in 1971.

Father Bauer earned a bachelor’s degree from Don Bosco College, Newton, N.J., and master’s degrees in religious education from Pontifical College Josephinum, Worthington, Ohio, and English from Ohio State University in Columbus.

His brothers, David McConney and Richard Presby, survive him. A Mass for the deceased was offered March 24 at the provincial house. He was buried in Salesian Cemetery, Goshen.
