Father Thomas Green, S.J.

Father Thomas Green, S.J., who served as pastor of two parishes in Manhattan, died Dec. 26 at Murray-Weigel Hall in the Bronx. He was 83.

During his 17 years at St. Aloysius parish in Harlem, beginning in 1994, he served as pastor, parochial vicar and superior of the Jesuit community there. He also was pastor of St. Francis Xavier parish in Manhattan, 1970-1977.

He also served at parishes in Brooklyn and Buffalo, and in Jersey City, N.J.

He taught mathematics and physics at Xavier High School, Manhattan, 1955-1958. He also taught physics and religion at St. Peter’s Prep, Jersey City, 1963-1967.

Born in Jersey City, he entered the Jesuit novitiate of St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepsie, in 1948. He was ordained to the priesthood at Fordham University Chapel in 1961.

He studied philosophy at Bellarmine College, Plattsburgh, and theology at Woodstock College, Md.

He retired to Murray-Weigel Hall last year.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 31 at Fordham University Church. Burial was at the Jesuit cemetery in Auriesville.
