Father Thomas P. Murphy, S.J., who served at St. Margaret of Cortona parish in the Riverdale section of the Bronx for 33 years, died June 28 in Murray-Weigel Hall in the Bronx. He was 90.
Father Murphy served as parochial vicar and in part-time pastoral ministry at St. Margaret of Cortona, 1976-2009.
At Regis High School in Manhattan, he was president, 1972-1976, and director of admissions and dean, 1971. He also served in education posts in the Philippines, 1960-1971.
Born in Brooklyn, he entered the Jesuits in 1944 and professed final vows in 1960. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1957.
He received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Novaliches in the Philippines, and a bachelor’s and licentiate in sacred theology from Woodstock College.
His sister, Marie Tuttle, survives him.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated July 3 in St. Margaret of Cortona Church. Burial was at the Jesuit Cemetery in Auriesville.
