Father William J. McGowan, S.J.

Father William J. McGowan, S.J., who served for 40 years at Xavier High School in Manhattan, died April 29 at Murray-Weigel Hall, the Jesuit infirmary in the Bronx, where he had resided since 2004. He was 75. At Xavier he was a college counselor, 1964-2001, and a member of the advancement office, 2001-2004. He was a member of Xavier's first advisory board. Born in Brooklyn, he entered the Jesuits at St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepsie, in 1949 and professed vows in 1951. He studied at Woodstock College in Maryland and was ordained June 21, 1962. He held a bachelor's degree from Fordham University. A Funeral Mass was celebrated May 3 at St. Francis Xavier Church in Manhattan, with burial the next day in the Jesuit Cemetery at Auriesville. He is survived by a brother, James, and four sisters, Mary Sprague, Peg Schuhle, Rita Sheehan and Kathleen McGowan.
