Goaltender Stephen Krug stopped 10 shots to earn the game’s most valuable player award for leading Iona Preparatory School to the New York State Catholic High Schools AA boys’ lacrosse championship with an 11-8 victory over St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute of Buffalo in New Rochelle May 28.

Sophomore John Mitchell scored his fifth goal of the match with a minute remaining to seal Iona Prep’s first state title since 2015 and fourth overall. Senior All-American John Schreiber contributed three goals.

The Gaels finished with a 17-4 overall record.

“I’m extremely proud of this team, the way they battled through injuries all year long and stuck together,” Iona Prep coach Rick Trizano told CNY. “Being a young team, with 10 underclassmen playing meaningful minutes, it is a tribute to the seniors for guiding them through this journey. Senior leadership really came through in the playoffs on both offense and defense.

“We emphasized effort as the key to victory, and they gave us all they had.”

The Gaels earned a berth in the state final May 24 by beating Kellenberg Memoral High School in New Rochelle for the 10th Downstate CHSAA championship.

“We will have a lifetime of great memories from this season,” Trizano said.
