Jean Howlett, former district superintendent for the Manhattan Catholic schools, died Dec. 23 at Ozanam Hall Nursing Home in Queens. She was 72.

She was district superintendent and also coordinator of testing for Manhattan elementary schools, 1990-1996. She also was principal of Immaculate Conception School in Manhattan, 1972-1990, and was a teacher at The Epiphany School, 1969-1972, and St. John the Evangelist School, 1956-1969, both in Manhattan.

She left the district superintendent’s post in 1996 to become principal of St. Luke’s School, her parish school in Queens, where she served until retiring from education in 1998.

She held a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University and master’s degrees from Fordham and Columbia universities. She is survived by a sister, Ann Maschin.

Msgr. Kevin O’Brien, pastor of St. Philip Neri parish in the Bronx and a former regional vicar of South Manhattan, was the celebrant and homilist of the Funeral Mass offered Jan. 2 at St. Luke’s Church in Queens.
