John M. Regan Jr.

John M. Regan Jr., former chairman and chief executive officer of Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc. and a supporter of Church organizations and charities, died Jan. 10. He was 89.

Mr. Regan had a 40-year career with Marsh & McLennan, becoming president in 1972 and CEO a year later, a position he held until his retirement in 1986.

In the archdiocese, he was active in charitable organizations including the Inner-City Scholarship Fund and the Cardinal’s Committee on Education. He was a trustee emeritus of the University of Notre Dame.

Born in Minneapolis, he was a graduate of Yale University. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals. At the time of his death, he was a resident of Ocean Ridge, Fla.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Prudence; four sons, John M. III, Peter, Christopher and William; two daughters, Deborah R. Edwards and Prudence R. Hallarman; and two brothers, Robert and Richard.

A private funeral was held, with a memorial service planned in June.
