Mother Rosalia Sosso, A.S.C.J.

Mother Rosalia Sosso, A.S.C.J., who taught and was a principal in the archdiocese and went on to become superior general of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, died July 15 at Sacred Heart Manor in Hamden, Conn. She was 97.

She was principal of Sacred Heart Private School in the Bronx, 1948-1951, and taught at Our Lady of Pompeii, Manhattan, 1937-1945. She also taught and served as principal at schools in Connecticut.

She served as mistress of aspirants while teaching at Sacred Heart Academy, Hamden.

In 1960, she was appointed provincial superior of her congregation’s U.S. province. She was elected superior general of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for three terms, serving in Rome, 1968-1986.

She then served at a spirituality center in Rome, 1987-1999, before retiring to Sacred Hart Manor, Hamden.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., she entered the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1935 and professed final vows in 1944.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Fordham University.

She is survived by her sister Anne Paolino. A Funeral Mass was offered July 18 at Sacred Heart Manor Chapel followed by burial at All Saints Cemetery, North Haven, Conn.
