Msgr. Thomas F. Scanlon, who served as pastor of Our Lady of Victory parish, Mount Vernon, for 14 years, died Feb. 11 at the Wartburg, Mount Vernon. He was 92.

A Funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, Feb. 17, at 10:30 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul-St. Ursula, 129 Birch St., Mount Vernon. Auxiliary Bishop Dominick Lagonegro will be the principal celebrant, and Father Justin Cinnante, O. Carm., will deliver the homily.

“He was a faithful priest and set a great example for the priesthood,” Father Cinnante told CNY. “He loved the church. He was a very gentle and loving man. He was always available to people and many people would come to him for confession and spiritual direction. Even in the nursing home, people came to him for spiritual direction.’’

Father Cinnante recalled meeting Msgr. Scanlon in the late 1990s when he was a student at Cathedral Prep Seminary, Rye. Father Cinnante shared Msgr. Scanlon’s devotion for the Blessed Mother. Msgr. Scanlon died on the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.

“The Blessed Mother brought us together,’’ Father Cinnante said. “I said she will take care of us. He said she’s taken care of us our whole life, and she will continue to take care of us.’’

Msgr. Scanlon served at Our Lady of Victory from 1985 until his retirement in 1999. He also was pastor at St. Anthony’s, Pine Plains, 1980-1985. He served at St. Augustine’s, Ossining, 1974-1980; SS. Peter and Paul, Mount Vernon, 1954-1974; and St. Peter’s, Haverstraw, 1949-1954.

Msgr. Scanlon served as a troop chaplain, scout council chaplain and associate archdiocesan scout chaplain, 1949-1982. He was awarded the Bronze Pelican by the Archdiocesan Scout Committee and the St. George Award by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting.

Born in the Bronx, he attended Cathedral College and completed his studies for the priesthood at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie. He was ordained in 1949 and named a monsignor in 1995.

Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla.
