Msgr. Vincent Bartley, pastor of St. Paul’s on Staten Island for 14 years, died Nov. 6 in Ireland. He was 85.

Msgr. Bartley served at St. Paul, 1993-2007. He retired in 2008, and served as a weekend associate in recent years at Our Lady Star of the Sea, Staten Island.

He also was parochial vicar of St. John Neumann, Staten Island, 2007-2008; Holy Child, Staten Island, 1990-1993; and St. Mary’s, Yonkers, 1984-1986.

A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 12 at St. Peter Church in Phibsborough, Dublin, Ireland. Father Kevin Bartley was the principal celebrant.

“He was very outgoing and gregarious, and very involved at St. Paul’s when he was pastor there,” said Msgr. Peter Finn, pastor of Blessed Sacrament and dean of Staten Island.

“He will be missed for his presence and activity here on Staten Island,” said Msgr. Finn. “He’s been here for quite a while.”

“He was very active in Irish-American groups. He was definitely proud of his Irish heritage. He would return to Ireland and had a lot of family over there.”

Born in Dublin, Msgr. Bartley entered the Society of African Missions in Galway in 1958 and professed final vows in 1966. He studied for the priesthood at the congregation’s seminary in Longridge, England, and the Missionary Institute in London. He was ordained in Dublin in 1969.

He served as a missionary in Nigeria, 1969-1979, and was provincial councilor and later vice provincial for the congregation in London, 1979-1984. He served at a church in Scotland, 1986-1990.

Msgr. Bartley was incardinated into the archdiocese in 1993 and named a monsignor in 2006.

In 1998, Msgr. Bartley was honored at the annual Charity Ball of John Fitzgerald Kennedy Division 1, Ancient Order of Hibernians, on Staten Island for his contributions as a priest to the Church in Ireland, England, Africa and the United States.

His brother, Gerry, and sisters, Angela and Ann, survive him.
