Rosemary Beirne, a member of the English faculty at The Ursuline School in New Rochelle since 2011, has been selected as the school’s next principal, effective July 1.

The appointment, after a six-month search, was announced by school president Eileen Davidson, who said she was “overwhelmingly confident…Mrs. Beirne’s experience, skills and passion” make her the right choice.

Mrs. Beirne, in an email to parents and alumnae, said she was “thrilled to accept the honor and opportunity to be principal of The Ursuline School. My love for this school and its mission is beyond words.”

The Ursuline School is an independent, girls’ Catholic college preparatory school with 800 students in grades 6 to 12.

Mrs. Beirne has served as co-chair of Ursuline’s strategic plan implementation committee for four years. She is co-moderator of the student newspaper, Unison.

She is an adjunct instructor in journalism at the Arthur Carter Journalism Institute of New York University and in the College of New Rochelle Graduate School Division of Communication and Leadership. She previously taught at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University and a master’s from The College of New Rochelle.

Before coming to Ursuline, Mrs. Beirne was an assistant managing editor at Newsday, where she supervised news staff covering breaking and enterprise news. She also was an award-winning reporter and editor at the Gannett Newspapers in Westchester County.

She and her husband are the parents of two sons and a daughter, all of whom are Catholic school graduates.

As principal, Mrs. Beirne will succeed Carol Killebrew, who will complete the current school year. “Ms. Killebrew will be able to ensure an extremely smooth transition with the enthusiasm and creativity that are her trademarks,” Ms. Davidson said.
