Robert M. Callagy, a lawyer who litigated landmark First Amendment cases, died Dec. 1 at Greenwich Hospital in Greenwich, Conn. He was 68. Involved in Catholic higher education, he served as chairman of the board of the College of Mount St. Vincent and vice chairman of the board of Manhattanville College, and was a board member of the Lauinger Library at his alma mater, Georgetown University. He also was chairman of the Rye Free Reading Room and a trustee of his parish, Resurrection in Rye. Born in Albany, he was a graduate of New York University School of Law. He served in the U.S. Army and later joined the Manhattan law firm Satterlee Warfield and Stephens, where he spent his 39-year career. He guided its merger with another firm to become Satterlee Stephens Burke and Burke LLP. He represented publishers and advertising agencies in cases involving the First Amendment and copyright law; lectured on advertising law and intellectual property issues; and wrote many articles for legal publications. He was active in civic and benevolent organizations. Surviving are his wife, Lynn; two daughters, Susan McCloskey and Sara Finn; a son, Robert Callagy Jr.; a sister, Regina Burke; and a brother, John M. Callagy. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 4 at Resurrection Church, with burial at Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich.
