Sister Ann Murtagh, O.S.F., who was a principal and teacher at schools in the archdiocese, died Dec. 6 at Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Staten Island. She was 89.

Sister Ann taught at St. Catharine’s School, Pelham, 1952-1960; St. Eugene’s, Yonkers, 1960-1970; and Immaculate Conception, Tuckahoe, 1970-1972, and she was principal of Our Lady of Loretto, Cold Springs, 1972-1976.

She later served as a teacher and principal at schools in Pennsylvania, and also taught in Keyport, N.J.

Sister Ann volunteered at the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin (Mount Loretto), Staten Island, 1990-1994, after which she was a supervisor of community resources for the developmentally disabled on Staten Island. She was honored many times for her work promoting breast care awareness and volunteered for many years in fund-raising for the Clove Lakes Health Care facility.

Born in New York City, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis at Hastings on Hudson in 1950 and professed final vows in 1955. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Fordham University.

Her twin sister, Mary, predeceased her last January.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 11 at St. Teresa’s Church, Staten Island. Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery at Mount Loretto.
