Sister Anna Marian Pavao, M.M., who served in Hawaii and on the Marshall Islands and held leadership roles in her religious community, died Dec. 15 in the Maryknoll Sisters Residential Care unit at Maryknoll. She was 84.

   Sister Anna Marian was elected vice president of the Maryknoll Sisters in 1970, and re-elected in 1974.

   She taught in Kalihi on Oahu, Hawaii, 1949-1956. In 1956, she was sent to serve in Likiep in the Marshall Islands. She returned to Hawaii and was a teacher and principal on Waikiki, 1961-1969. She also was superior of the convent there.

   In 1979, she was assigned to Bandung, Indonesia, but returned to Hawaii in 1986 where she did parish work in Hohokaa. In 1989, she was appointed as an advocate to the Marriage Tribunal there.

   Born in Honolulu, she entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1946 and professed final vows in 1952.

   She held a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii and a master's from Hunter College in Manhattan.

   She is survived by a sister, Viola.

   A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 18 at the Maryknoll Sisters' chapel, with burial at the sisters' cemetery in Ossining.
