Sister Bernardine Hoban, R.S.H.M., who served for many years in Zimbabwe, died Sept. 8 at Marymount Convent in Tarrytown. She was 89.

Her first teaching assignment was at Gerard School in Manhattan, 1949-1952. She also taught and was principal in Virginia in the 1950s, and served at Marymount School, Paris, 1956-1962. She was superior and principal at St. Anne School, Garden City, 1962-1965, and also served as superior and taught in Illinois, 1965-1968.

She taught at Marymount School in Umtali, Zimbabwe, 1968-1976. She returned to Zimbabwe in 1981 to begin a 22-year ministry as a teacher, retreat leader and spiritual director in Umtali/Mutare and Rusape/Harare at a seminary, a Carmelite Novitiate, a training center and a parish.

Named directress of initial formation at the first RSHM Novitiate in English-speaking Africa, she guided novices from Zambia and Zimbabwe.

She was principal at St. Andrew School, Sag Harbor, 1977-1978. She later went to England and taught at Marymount International School London.

Born in County Mayo, Ireland, she entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary at Marymount in Tarrytown in 1947 and made final vows in 1954.

A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 12 at Marymount Convent. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.
