Sister Caroline Laiso, R.S.M.

Sister Caroline Laiso, R.S.M., who taught at schools in the archdiocese and served in leadership positions with the Sisters of Mercy, died Nov. 24 at McAuley Health Care Center in Watchung, N.J. She was 87.

She was a member of the Sisters of Mercy Generalate leadership team in Bethesda, Md., 1974-1977, and on the sisters’ New York Province leadership team, 1977-1982.

She taught in the archdiocese at St. Catharine Academy, the Bronx, 1964-1972 and 1959-1960; Our Lady of Victory Academy, Dobbs Ferry, 1963-1964; St. Simon Stock School, Bronx, 1960-1961; St. Margaret Mary, Bronx, 1958-1959; and Commander Shea, Manhattan, 1955-1958.

Sister Caroline was the administrator of Mount Mercy, Dobbs Ferry, 1974-1977.

More recently, she was a facilitator for religious communities, and served in different capacities in the Newark Archdiocese and Rockville Centre Diocese.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1950 and made final vows in 1956. She earned a bachelor’s degree at Fordham University, and a master’s from Iona College.

She is survived by a brother, Edward, and a sister, Mary Young.
A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 2 in the chapel at Marian Woods, Hartsdale. Burial was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
