Sister Catherine Cussen, M.M., who served in Central America for 38 years, died Oct. 17 at Maryknoll Residential Care in Ossining. She was 85. She went to Panama in 1951, studying language for two years before going to Nicaragua where she was an elementary school teacher. She then was assigned to Guatemala,
where she spent a total of 22 years in school administration and as a catechist and parish worker, 1964-1967; 1972-1990; and 1995-1996. She also did volunteer
service in Mexico, 2001-2004. From 1990 to 1993 she did mission awareness promotion in the eastern United States, and from 1996 to 2001 she was engaged in Hispanic ministry at St. Cecilia’s parish in Waterbury, Conn. Born in South Boston, she entered Maryknoll in 1945 and received the religious name of Sister Miriam Aloysius. She professed final vows in 1951. She received a bachelor’s degree from Maryknoll Teachers College and a master’s from St. John’s University. A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 23 at Maryknoll Sisters Center, with burial in the sisters’ cemetery.
