Sister Catherine Howard, O.P., who served as president of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt for six years, died Nov. 9 at Montefiore Nyack Hospital in Nyack. She was 67.

She was president of the congregation, 2011-2017, and congregational councilor, 2005-2011.

Following a sabbatical in 2017, she assisted with special projects at Dominican College in the Office of the President.

She was an assistant professor of social work at Fordham University, 2004-2005, and that same period served as coordinator of the Ryan White program of Dominican Sisters Family Health Service in the South Bronx.

She was an adjunct professor of professional studies and professor of studies in management at the College for Human Services, Manhattan, 1992-1995.

She served as assistant director of Siena House, the Bronx, a shelter for homeless women and babies, 1989-1992.

She taught at St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School, the Bronx, 1980-1982, and served in child care and group living at St. Dominic’s Home, Blauvelt, 1978-1980 and 1976-1977. She also served in the development office of St. Dominic’s Convent, 1999-2005.

She taught in Jamaica, West Indies, 1982-1985.

Born in the Bronx, she earned a doctorate in social work from Fordham, a master’s in public administration from the College of Human Services, a master’s in human services from New York University and a bachelor’s in psychology from Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry,

She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt in 1976 and professed final vows in 1986.

She is survived by her sister, Virginia Reeves; her brothers, John, Peter and Thomas; several nieces and nephews, a grandniece and grandnephews.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 15 in St. Dominic’s Convent Chapel in Blauvelt. Burial was in St. Dominic’s Convent Cemetery.
