Sister Doris Marie Sahyonne, R.C.D., who was a catechist, pastoral associate and spiritual director at New York City parishes, died Jan.1 at Andrus on Hudson, Hastings. She was 83.

She was a catechist at St. Michael’s Church, Rockland Lake, before serving at St. Peter’s, St. Mary’s and St. James, all in Manhattan, from the 1950s through the 1970s. She then served at a parish in Long Island City until 1983.

She was a pastoral associate, a spiritual director and director of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) at Epiphany Church, Manhattan, 1983-2006.

In the 1980s, Sister Doris also taught catechist training courses at Cathedral High School and at St. Emeric and St. James parishes, all Manhattan. She was a retreat director at Mariandale, Ossining, and in Pennsylvania.

She served her community as formation director, 1985-1990, and as secretary general, a delegate in congregation chapters and a member of the leadership team, 1998-2002.

Born in Hackensack, N.J., she entered the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine in 1953 and professed final vows in 1960. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Fordham University and master’s in religious education from Boston College.

A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 5 at Epiphany Church. Burial followed at Ascension Cemetery, Airmont.
