Sister Dorothy Herbert, S.C., who was a guidance counselor and teacher at high schools in the archdiocese, died Sept. 28 at Mary the Queen Convent in Yonkers. She was 97. Sister Dorothy was a guidance counselor in the Bronx at Cardinal Spellman High School, 1970-1990, where she later was a library volunteer for four years, and at St. Barnabas High School, 1965-1970. She also volunteered in the library at the College of Mount St. Vincent, 1995-1998. She taught math at St. Peter's High School on Staten Island, 1958-1965 and 1933-1942, and at St. Gabriel's High School, New Rochelle, 1942-1958, where she also was a guidance counselor. Born in Brooklyn, she entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1930 and made final vows in 1936. She was formerly known as Sister Dorothy Marie. She held a bachelor's degree in Latin from the College of Mount St. Vincent and a master's in guidance from Fordham University. A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 30 at Mary the Queen Convent. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Yonkers.
