Sister Edith Mercedes Belmonte, S.C.

Sister Edith Mercedes Belmonte, S.C., who served for 14 years at the Schervier Nursing Care Center in the Bronx, died Oct. 17 at Cabrini of Westchester in Dobbs Ferry. She was 85.

At Schervier, Sister Edith Mercedes served as community health/home care supervisor, quality assurance, 1992-2004, and community health nurse, 1990-1992. She was administrator of St. Patrick Villa, Nanuet, 2004-2009; clinical resource nurse and patient education coordinator at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center, the Bronx, 1985-1990; and nurse and nursing instructor at Misericordia Hospital, the Bronx, 1975-1985.

She taught at Elizabeth Seton College, Yonkers, 1964-1973; Holy Cross Academy, Manhattan, 1961-1964; and Holy Trinity School, Mamaroneck, 1955-1961.

Born in Manhattan, she entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1952 and professed final vows in 1960.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the College of Mount St. Vincent, the Bronx, and master’s degrees in chemistry and physics from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

Her brother, Nicholas Belmonte, survives her.

A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 22 in the Mount St. Vincent Convent Assembly Room, the Bronx. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Yonkers.
