Sister Eileen McCabe, O.P., a member of the Dominican Sisters of Hope who taught at schools in the archdiocese for 39 years, died Jan. 23 at Meadowview at the Wartburg in Mount Vernon. She was 87.

Sister Eileen taught at St. Michael Academy, Manhattan, 1995-2009; Cardinal Hayes High School, the Bronx, 1983-1995; Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Poughkeepsie, 1974-1982; and St. Patrick School, Newburgh, 1955-1960.

She also taught at Mount St. Mary College, Newburgh, 1973-1974, and Academia San Jose High School in Puerto Rico, 1960-1973.

She retired to Wartburg in 2009.

Born in Jersey, City, N.J., she entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh in 1952 and professed final vows in 1957.

She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., and a master’s in English from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

She is survived by two sisters, Marguerite McCabe and Theresa Cook.

A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 27 at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel in the Dominican Center at Mount St. Mary College. Burial was at Dominican Sisters Cemetery in Newburgh.
