Sister Eileen McDonnell, R.S.C.J.

Sister Eileen McDonnell, R.S.C.J., who served in Manhattan as a pastoral minister at two parishes and as a teacher, died Feb. 17 at Kenwood Convent of the Sacred Heart in Albany. She was 89. She began pastoral ministry at St. Monica's parish in 1977, then spent two decades at Sacred Heart of Jesus parish, where she served with Sister Ana Ospina, R.S.C.J., who died Jan. 19. She worked with the elderly, the sick and the poor, and made home visitations as a Eucharistic minister. Previously she was a teacher and administrator in schools operated by her congregation in New York, Connecticut and Michigan. She served at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan, 1959-1965, and was superior of the community there, 1969-1977. She retired to Kenwood Convent in 1999. Born in New York City, she entered the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1937 and professed final vows in 1946. She held a bachelor's degree in literature and history from Manhattanville College. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 22 at Kenwood Convent, with burial in the convent cemetery.
