Sister Elaine Owens, S.C., a teacher and administrator at schools in the archdiocese for 17 years, died June 18 at home in Yonkers. She was 78.
Sister Elaine was a teacher and administrator at St. Brigid School, Manhattan, 1967-1978, and taught first grade at Holy Name of Jesus, Manhattan, 1965-1967, and Resurrection, Rye, 1961-1965.
She served at Kittay Senior Apartments, the Bronx, 2015-2018; Sisters of Charity Center, the Bronx, 2014-2015, 1999-2007 and 1978-1984; Mount St. Vincent Convent, the Bronx, 2009-2013; Sisters of Charity Retirement Convents, 2007-2008; New York Foundling Hospital, Manhattan, 1996-1999; International Center for Disabled, Manhattan, 1987-1996; and the archdiocese’s parish school planning office, 1987-1991.
Born on Staten Island, she entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1958 and professed final vows in 1966.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of Mount St. Vincent, the Bronx, and a master’s in social work from Fordham University, the Bronx. She was New York State-certified as an alcoholism counselor and a social worker.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated June 24 in the Mount St. Vincent Convent Assembly Room, the Bronx. Her cremains will be buried at a later date.
