Sister Elizabeth Tierney, R.S.M.

Sister Elizabeth Tierney, R.S.M., who developed a program to serve the elderly at Good Shepherd parish in Manhattan, died March 26 in Hastings-on-Hudson. She was 86.

Sister Elizabeth served at Good Shepherd Parish for 30 years, until 1993. From 1978 until 1993, she served the senior citizen community, and developed a program to visit homebound seniors. In 1991, Catholic Charities honored her for her ministry to older adults. For the first 15 years at Good Shepherd, she taught in the parish school.

She also taught at the following elementary schools in Manhattan: St. Catherine of Genoa, 1951; St. Cecilia’s, 1957-1959; and Commander Shea, 1959-1963. She taught at Transfiguration, Tarrytown, 1951-1952 and 1953-1954; and Sacred Heart, the Bronx, 1952-1953.

Born in New York City, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1948 and professed final vows in 1954. She was formerly known as Sister Mary Del Rey.

She held a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University.

She is survived by two brothers, Eugene and John; and three sisters, Veronica Hornby, Eileen Barbieri and Marie Oleske.

A Funeral Mass was offered March 30 at Marian Woods Chapel in Hartsdale. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
