Sister Emily Azzolino, O.P., who taught in many schools in the archdiocese, died Oct. 24 in Siena Hall Infirmary of Dominican Convent, Sparkill. She
was 95. A teacher of art, English and French, she taught at the elementary and high school level, including 17 years at St. Helena’s High School in the Bronx,
1956-1973. In the archdiocese, she also taught at the following schools: St. Agnes, Sparkill, 1935-1936 and 1940-1942; St. Martin of Tours, the Bronx, 1936-1949; St. Catherine of Siena, Manhattan, 1942-1943; St. Helena, the Bronx, 1943-1949; Cathedral High School, Manhattan, 1949-1955; Sacred Heart, Suffern, 1955-1956; St. Paul’s, Valley Cottage, 1979-1982; and St. Gregory Barbarigo, Garnerville, 1979-1980. She also taught art to the women of New Hope Manor, Barryville, 1984-1992, and in retirement after that she offered volunteer service to the community at Dominican Convent. Born in Manhattan, she entered the
Sparkill Dominicans in 1933 and became known as Sister M. Emily Thomasine. She professed final vows in 1944. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English at Manhattan College, the Bronx, and a master’s in art at Notre Dame University, South Bend, Ind. A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 27 at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel at Dominican Convent, with burial in St. Agnes Cemetery in Sparkill.
