Sister Gertrude Rooney, O.S.F.

Sister Gertrude Rooney, O.S.F., who taught on Staten Island and in Westchester, died May 4 at Wartburg Adult Care Campus, Mount Vernon. She was 93.

She taught at St. Elizabeth’s, 1947-1962, and St. Aloysius, 1962-1963, both at Mount Loretto, Staten Island. She taught at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Pelham Manor, 1962-1966, and St. Eugene’s, Yonkers, 1966-1990. She also taught at Immaculate Conception, Astoria, Queens, 1946-1947.

After her retirement, she was a volunteer at the Sprain Brook Nursing Home, 1990-2003. She then went to the Hastings motherhouse, where she assisted on the switchboard. In 2011, she moved to Wartburg Assisted Living.

Born in New York City, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Hastings in 1939 and made final vows in 1944.

A Funeral Mass was offered May 13 at St. Eugene’s Church, Yonkers. Burial followed at Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island.
