Sister Irene E. Solzbacher, M.M., who served as a doctor, a psychiatrist and a teacher, mostly in Hawaii, died Nov. 29 at Maryknoll Sisters Center, Ossining. She was 84.

She served as director of the Kahumana Counseling Center and director of the center’s social service, and she was a psychiatrist at the Waianae Mental Health Clinic, all in Hawaii, 1979-2000. She served in a psychiatric residency program at the University of Hawaii, 1975-1978.

Between 1965 and 1975, Sister Irene studied and served in Hawaii in various capacities related to medicine, psychiatry and education.

She last served as a volunteer/medical companion in the outpatient clinic of the Maryknoll Sisters Center, from 2001 until her retirement in 2004.

Born in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, she entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1953 and made final vows in 1962. She held a medical degree and a master of education degree in physical science.

She is survived by her three sisters, Josephine, Regina and Eve.

Sister Irene donated her body to science. A Memorial Mass was offered Dec. 6 at Annunciation Chapel at Maryknoll Sisters Center.
