Sister Jean Marie Timko, O.P., who taught in New York, New Jersey and Puerto Rico, died Dec. 21 at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh. She was 73.

She taught at Holy Rosary School, Hawthorne, 1975-1976, and St. Thomas School, Cornwall-on-Hudson, 1972-1974. She served on the infirmary staff at Mount St. Mary Convent in Newburgh, 1974-1975.

She taught religious education at Holy Family parish in Flushing, 1979-1984. She also was a teacher in Jersey City and Paterson, N.J., and in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. More recently she was involved in a prayer ministry.

Born in Trenton, N.J., she entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters in Newburgh in 1956 and professed her final vows in 1961. She held a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh and a master’s in theology from St. John’s University.

She is survived by her brother, John.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 24 at the Dominican Sisters of Hope Chapel in Newburgh. Burial followed in the sisters’ cemetery.
