Sister Joan Anderson, S.C., who led a collaborative effort in establishing Nazareth Center, a residence for children in need of protective care in the Bahamas, died Nov. 27 at Cabrini of Westchester nursing home in Dobbs Ferry. She was 86.

Sister Joan served as the Nazareth Center administrator from its opening in 2000 until she returned to the United States in 2007.

Early on she served as a teacher in the Bahamas for three years, and later served in the Bahamas again for 38 years, including 22 years as a school administrator.

The schools where she taught in the Archdiocese of New York were St. Gabriel, the Bronx, 1967-1969; St. Stephen, Manhattan, 1966-1967; St. Mary, Rosebank, Staten Island, 1962-1963; and St. Agatha, Nanuet, where she was a group mother, 1955-1962.
Born in Brooklyn, she entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1952 and made final vows in 1960. She held a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of Mount St. Vincent, and a master’s in education from Hunter College. She was formerly known as Sister Mary Arthur.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 3 at the Assembly Room at Mount St. Vincent Convent in the Bronx. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery in Yonkers.
