Sister Joan Looney, O.P., a former coordinator of Newburgh Ministry who also was a teacher and principal, died Feb. 2 in Siena Hall, Sparkill. She was 72.

She was coordinator from 1988 to 1997 of Newburgh Ministry, a community center founded by women religious from several congregations to serve the needy of Newburgh.

She was principal of St. Vito’s School in Mamaroneck, 1972-1980, after teaching there for three years.

She also taught at St. Rose of Lima, Manhattan, 1958-1959; St. Helena’s, the Bronx, 1959-1961; and St. Paul’s, Valley Cottage, 1961-1966.

In 1997 she moved to Charleston, S.C., where she served at Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach on St. John’s Island.

Born in Manhattan, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill in 1956 and professed final vows in 1963.

She held a bachelor’s degree from St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill and master’s degrees from City College of New York and Iona College.

She is survived by a sister, Eileen Spencer. A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 5 at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel at Dominican Convent, with burial in St. Agnes Cemetery in Sparkill.
