Sister Josephine Neary, P.B.V.M

Sister Josephine Neary, P.B.V.M, who was a teacher in the archdiocese and also served in a leadership position in her religious congregation, died May 1. She was 92. She taught at St. Michael Academy in Manhattan, 1941-1950, and at Presentation Junior College, 1953-1965, and St. Joseph's School, 1974-1975, both in New Windsor. From 1975 until her retirement in 1983 she served as secretary general of her congregation. She also was mistress of novices, 1950-1953. Born in Manhattan, Sister Josephine, formerly known as Sister Mary Jude, entered the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1936 and professed final vows in 1942. She held a bachelor's degree in education from Manhattan College and a master's in religious education from Fordham University. She is survived by her sister, Eileen Canovatchel. A Funeral Mass was offered May 4 at Mount St. Joseph Chapel in New Windsor, with burial at Mount St. Joseph Cemetery.
