Sister Kathleen Kiernan, S.S.N.D.

Sister Kathleen Kiernan, S.S.N.D., who taught in Manhattan in the 1920s, died Sept. 14 at Lourdes Health Care Center of Villa Notre Dame in Wilton, Conn. She was 105.

Then known as Sister Mary Ambrosine, she taught at St, Joseph’s School, Yorkville, from 1922 to 1927.

It was her first teaching assignment in what was to be a 66-year career as a teacher in Westbury and Brooklyn and in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, before she retired from the classroom in 1988.

A native of Roxbury, Mass., she entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1920 and professed vows in 1923. She held a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University.

A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 17 in the chapel at Villa Notre Dame, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bethel, Conn.
