Sister Kathleen Marie Skurka, O.P.

Sister Kathleen Marie Skurka, O.P., who taught in New York and New Jersey, died Dec. 22 at Community Medical Center in Toms River, N.J. She was 67. She taught at St. Augustine’s in Larchmont, 1961-1963. In New Jersey she taught in high schools and was a basketball scorekeeper and cheerleading adviser for many years. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Msgr. Donovan High School in Toms River in 2005. She taught English in Peru for 14 summers and recently had been teaching Spanish as a volunteer. Born in Passaic, N.J., she entered the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh in 1957 and professed final vows in 1962. She held a bachelor’s degree in education from Mount St. Mary College and a master’s in Spanish from Middlebury College. She is survived by two sisters, Kathy Kiely and Celine Wurst. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 28 at St. Joseph’s Church in Toms River. Burial was in the Dominican Sisters of Hope Cemetery in Newburgh.
