Sister Louise Notaro, M.M., a missionary for 20 years in Japan and 17 years in Latin America, died March 17 at Maryknoll Sisters Residential Care III in Ossining. She was 83.
She was assigned to Japan in 1980, where she taught at the high school and college levels, including 11 years as an English teacher at Sophia University in Tokyo. She also engaged in leadership training and adult education.
She served as a middle school and high school teacher in Guatemala City, 1959-1969. She then taught English for two years in Mexico City. In 1972 she was assigned to Arequipa, Peru, where she taught English as a second language to high-school-age students and did guidance counseling. She returned to the United States in 1976 and served for three years as receptionist at Maryknoll Sisters Bethany Infirmary before going to Japan.
She returned to the Maryknoll Center for good in 2000, and was a volunteer tutor of English as a second language.
Born in Kensington, Conn., she entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1950 and received the religious name Sister Anthony Mary. She professed final vows in 1959. She held a bachelor’s degree from Maryknoll Teachers College.
She is survived by a sister, Marie N. Lombard. A Funeral Mass was offered March 23 in the Main Chapel at the Maryknoll Sisters Center, with burial in the sisters’ cemetery.
